WORKSHOP ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF MALAYSIA RAIL INDUSTRI STANDARD (MRIS) FOR ROLLING STOCK

On the 15th February 2024, Malaysia Rail Development Corporation (MRDC) in collaboration with SIRIM STS Sdn Bhd held the inaugural Workshop for the development of MRIS for six (6) Rolling Stock Components. This workshop was held at Mardhiyyah Hotel in Shah Alam and it will kick-start an 8-month process of deliberation, drafting, compiling and finalizing the standards for the 6 components are as follows:

  1. Window Glass
  2. Pantograph Carbon Strip
  3. LED Lighting (Interior & Exterior)
  4. Brake Pad/Block/Shoes
  5. Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)
  6. Seats

Participants whom have attended this workshop are experts drawn from the various Government Agencies, Asset Owners, Rail Operators, Academia, International Union of Railways (UIC) and the local rail industry related to the above-mentioned components. 

MRDC has been given the mandate as an agency under the purview of Ministry of Transport to develop  four (4) core objectives and programs namely as Human Capital Development (HCD), Rail Industry Development Program (RIDP), Testing & Certification (T&C) and Research & Technology (R&T). These focus areas are aligned with the National Transport Policy (NTP) 2019-2030 launched by the Government and as required by current rail industry in Malaysia. Under the Testing & Certification, MRDC initiated the Malaysia Rail Industry Standard (MRIS) with the main aim of ensuring the railway system components/products manufactured locally adheres to the quality standards and requirements by the local train operators and MRO companies.

Development of the Malaysia Rail Industry Standard (MRIS) is to fulfill the Malaysia Government target for the local rail industry are as follows:-

  1. To support and to promote a safe, efficient, sustainable and competitive industry.
  2. To harmonise the Malaysian Rail Industry practice in line with international standards.
  3. To support commonality and interoperability of various rail systems.
  4. To reduce dependency on foreign Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).
  5. To ensure Malaysia’s become the manufacturing hub for rollingstock components for the local and ASEAN market.
  6. To encourage Malaysia rail industry to be part of the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) global supply chain for Rolling Stock components.

Malaysia Rail Industry Standard (MRIS) will be a game changer for local industry to develop local talent and invest in new technologies as this will enhance the capabilities and expertise to support MRO services and participate as suppliers/vendors for Rolling Stock manufactured for the Malaysian market and ASEAN region.
